39th BLAYDON RACE 5.25
Newcastle to Blaydon, Tyne & Wear
Graham Rush sprinted to victory in his debut, while Alyson Dixon regained the title she last won in 2016 in this increasingly popular event sponsored this year by Sage UK.
After heavy rainfall the day before, conditions for the race were much better, warm, sunny, though the field of nearly 4200 runners faced a light breeze throughout their journey. Building works near the old finish of the event, meant runners now ran a measured distance of 5.25M with the finish now in the grounds of the Supermarket Car Park, which signified a later start of 7.15pm for a Sunday.
After the bell rang for the start at Collingwood Street in Newcastle, a group of 15 runners soon headed the field passing the first Mile in 4mins 55secs. Various athletes held short-lived leads including Nick Swinburn, Charlie Hulson and 2018 winner John Beattie. Passing through 2M in 9mins 28secs, the group was not broken up until nearing Scotswood Bridge when Dominic Shaw made a bid for victory. The group was now down to four at 3M (14:07), with Shaw being joined by Rush, Carl Avery and Hulson.
Rush was the next to make a move closely shadowed by Avery. The pair passed through 5M (24:30), and despite a gallant attempt by Avery, Rush proved too strong for his rival in the final 200m. Hulson took third place ahead of Shaw with Swinburn holding on for 5th place. Second-placed Avery had unluckily finished in that position for the last 3 years. He did however lead his club Morpeth Harriers to victory in the team competition for the 17th successive year. First veteran to finish was Terry Scott, in the M45 category, who finished in 9th place overall.
Dixon was expected to be given a hard race by Claire Duck, but although behind her rival in the early stages, was untroubled when taking the lead. Dixon finished in 29th position overall, crossing the finish line 28secs ahead of Duck. Without saying, Dixon was also the first veteran to finish.
This was her third victory in the race, having also won in 2015. 2018 winner Danielle Hodgkinson finished in third place ahead of Rebecca Robinson who was challenging throughout for the third spot.
