NORTH EASTERN COUNTIES A.A CHAMPIONSHIPS
Redcar Racecourse, Cleveland
Jack Martin and Sonia Samuels made the journey from Greater Manchester worthwhile, to win the two Senior titles at the 112th edition of the Championships, at a very cold but fairly firm Redcar Racecourse.
Morpeth won the Senior Mens' team title for the sixth succesive year, while Jarrow & Hebburn regained the Senior Womens' Trophy, they last won in 2014.
Martin, whose brother Patrick has won the title twice before, soon led the field with Carl Avery his nearest pursuer. The positions remained the same on the second lap with Calum Johnson now in third place. Martin maintained his advantage on the final circuit crossing the finish line 31secs ahead of Johnson who overhauled Avery to take second place.
Greg Jurasuriya finished 4th ahead of Andy Burn.
Supporting Avery were Ross Floyd (8th), Jordan Scott (14th), Chris Smith (17th), Karl Taylor (20th) and Thomas Straughan (26th) as Morpeth took the title ahead of Durham City with Tyne Bridge third (identical placings to 2016).
Samuels, under her maiden name of Thomas, had last won the title at Hartlepool in 2007. The 2016 Olympic Marathon runner, took an early lead closely followed by another former Wallsend Harrier, Danielle Hodgkinson. Samuels forged ahead on the second lap and Hodgkinson later dropped out. Samuels' margin of victory was 48secs over Emma Holt, with Jane Hodgson, like the winner in the W35 category, taking third place.
Morpeth the champions in 2015 and 2016, had three runners in the first ten but had to wait until 27th position for their 4th counter, which allowed Jarrow & Hebburn to take the title. Their counters were Georgia Campbell (4th), Alex Sneddon (5th), Gina Rutherford (9th) and Angela McGurk (16th). Sunderland took the bronze medals.
Kieran Hedley was a surprise winner of the U20 race leading from the start. After a recent return from injury, he crossed the line 17secs ahead of Joseph Grehan Bradley with Kieran Walker taking third place. The first two competitors are only in the first year of this age-group.
Durham City took the team title.
India Pentland surprised a lot of much older runners, by easily winning the combined U17/U20 Womens' race, taking the gold medal in the younger age-group. Pentland had finished 2nd in last year's U15 Championship.
Sophie Burnett second overall as in 2016, took the U20 Gold medal. Rhian Purvis, winner of the U17 title in 2016, had to settle for third and the silver medal for her age-group. Minor awards went to the much-improved Eli Barnbrook (2nd U20), Robyn Bennett (3rd U20) and Ellie Phillips (3rd U17).
Rory Leonard, 2nd in the Liverpool Challenge race, took the gold medal in the U17 event. Leonard, 3rd in 2016, fought off the strong challenge of Sam Charlton defeating his rival by 9secs. Daniel Dixon, the 2016 U15 champion finished third. Morpeth easily won the team title.
Henry Johnson maintained his impressive form in local races, by defeating his great rival and Houghton clubmate Will Bellamy by 8secs in the U15 race. Archie Lowe took third place. Durham City took the team title, their counters all being from Durham Johnston School, who performed well in the recent English Schools Cup Final.
Ines Curran maintained her excellent form to easily win the U15 Girls' race. She crossed the line 17secs ahead of Holly Peck with Lydia James finishing in third place, leading Houghton to the team title.
Chris Perkins successfully defended his U13 title defeating Josh Blevins by 25secs. Leo White finished in 3rd place, with Gateshead taking the team honours.
Lauren Brown took the U13 Girls title by a margin of 15secs from Lucy Scothern with Gabrielle Hall taking third place. Brown also led Alnwick to the team title.
Morpeth won the Overall Trophy for the third successive year. They were also the top Male team while Darlington took the honours for the Womens' races.
