SUNDERLAND 5km
Silksworth Sports Centre, Sunderland, Tyne & Wear
Dominic Shaw and Danielle Hodgkinson were the two main winners, taking with them the incorporated Northern Athletics and North East Counties titles.
In the bright sunshine, conditions were ideal with many athletes setting personal best times, on what is described as a fast course. The first 400m is mainly downhill before they cover two laps on a fairly even surface.
In the second race for Senior Men and younger veterans, Shaw and Sam Hancox (recent NE Counties winner of the 5M at the Bridges of the Tyne event), had broken clear of the field after the first shorter lap, with Oliver James leading a group of half a dozen athletes some 20m behind.
Shaw, who was third in 2017, proved too strong for his rival on the final circuit pulling away to a 15secs victory. Hancox held on for second ahead of the strong finishing teenager, Alex Brown. Tom Charlton finished fourth and like the second and third runners, smashed his personal best time for the distance.
The leading veteran (M40+) athlete was John Butters in 18th position. With Hancox backed by Thomas Straughan (9th) and Joe Armstrong (10th), Morpeth retained the Northern team title ahead of Tyne Bridge and Sunderland.
The first race for Women and older Veterans, saw recent British M55 1500m record breaker, Guy Bracken gain an easy victory. Andrew Hussey and Paul Collins followed him home.
Danielle Hodgkinson finished 19secs behind Bracken, but was an easy winner of the Womens' race. Hodgkinson repeated her 2017 victory, but as she has now returned to Wallsend, took the Northern title. She could not take the gold medal last year, as she ran for Midlands club, Birchfield. She did however, retain her North Eastern title.
Charlotte Penfold took second place ahead of Georgia Campbell. Danni Smythe in 4th, broke her previous best figures for the distance by 39secs.
Teenager, Robyn Bennett finished 5th ahead of the leading veteran, Alice Smith, who supported by youngsters Jess Fox (7th) and Sarah Knight (10th), led host club Sunderland to the Northern team title. Tyne Bridge and North Shields Poly took the minor awards.
