HEATON HARRIERS MEMORIAL TOWN MOOR 10km
Town Moor, Newcastle upon Tyne
Adrian Bailes and Alyson Dixon took the main honours in this popular Remberance Day promotion, organised by Heaton Harriers and supported by Quantum Business Park. They also took the North Eastern Counties 10km Road Race titles, which were incorporated in this year's event.
450 runners lined up in the cold overcast and blustery conditions, though luckily the threatened rain never arrived until after the event.
At halfway a group of six athletes were together (15:59), before Bailes and visiting athlete, James McKenna broke away with 3km remaining. The track speed of Bailes (a former North Eastern track champion at 800m and 1500m), proved decisive in the closing stages as he pulled away to a 10secs victory over McKenna. Lewis Gamble-Thompson took third place ahead of last year's runner-up Conrad Franks, the pair taking the minor Counties medals. The winner had finished third in 2017.
Led by James Dunce in 6th place, Tyne Bridge won the team title for the third successive year. Darren Purvis was the leading Veteran (M40+) in 12th position.
Marathon International Dixon had previously won the race for three successive years from 2012-2014 and had set the course record of 34mins 6secs on the third occasion.
Passing halfway in 17mins 38secs, Dixon had a 55secs lead over Danni Smythe and at this stage leading Junior Rhian Purves, making her debut over the distance was lying in third place (19:10). Dixon, now in the W40 category, crossed the line in 24th position, increasing her advantage to 1min 44secs over Smythe. Jacqueline Penn moved through strongly to take third place after lying 6th at halfway (19:20). In this case the first three competitors took the County medals.
Sophie Marr in 4th position, led Tyne Bridge to the team honours, and a new Trophy, a title they last won in 2015.
In the supporting Junior races, Taylor Glover was the leading U20 repeating his victory in the U17 age-group last year. He also shaved 6secs off his previous best time for the 5km distance. Gracie Hufton won the corresponding Womens' race, taking 6secs off her previous figures.
The one course record of the day came in the U15 Boys 3km event, when Charlie Daley bettered the previous figures by 25secs. In fact the first three were also inside this mark.
Tom Slane, maintained his domination in the U13 Boys age-group, while other victories went to Katie Francis (U15 Girls), Alice Lewis (U13 Girls), Alex Lienard (U11 Boys) and Poppy Wilde (U11 Girls).
